(Interestingly it is not news weather and health). Educational institutions, junior high, high school and college typically engage in sports and there are many different professional teams spread across the USA. Interestingly each team is supported by a reasonable number of fans, expecting their team to win. There are entire sections of newspapers, and entire magazines dedicated to sport. At the work place conversation often deals with who will win the “big” game, or in an Olympic year, which country is winning more medals.

Slide 37

Slide 37 and 38: As previously noted Education, Service and Research are basic tenants of Sport Science. Currently, worldwide, there is not always clear separation among the faculty/staff responsible for each of these areas. Often staff (PhD’s) trained to carryout research are part of the testing service (or they are mired down in administrative work). Thus one aspect of the future would be to provided greater separation – those interested and trained to produce good research would concentrate on this area. Those trained and interested in service (i.e. testing, training, etc.) such as strength and conditioning coaches would be primarily responsible for this area. This would not mean that those interested in research would never be involved in service, but rather this would allow for greater specialization in terms of interest and training and should increase productivity. All of those involved would function within the SPEG.

However, as previously noted, a new paradigm for identifying and funding sport science is necessary. The worth of sport science must be communicated to potential donors in such a manner as to increase funding in an unrestricted manner. Unrestricted funding does not mean that there is no internal auditing or that money is available with no accountability –procuring grants are certainly a priority, however:
•	Construction of a grant, even for small amounts of money, is exceedingly time consuming and the grant invariably is restricted to a specific problem.
•	Currently, the chances of procuring a grant such as NIH, CDC etc. are exceedingly small. Funding for typical medical/physiological NIH R-O1 applications from October 2002 that involved human subjects was less than 20% and applications with MD’s as the PI received priority (Kotchen T. et al. NIH peer review of grant applications for clinical research JAMA, 291(7): 836-843, 2002). None of the NIH grants funded sport science.
•	It must be realized that sport/sport science is an exceptionally dynamic undertaking, there must be freedom to develop the SPEG and address coaching problems and address them in a timelier manner, and this cannot be done through grant writing.

While this picture of dying sport science and lack of funds at first seems bleak – there may be light at the end of the tunnel. At ETSU we have reorganized our undergraduate and graduate program to focus on sport science – the student response has been exceptionally positive and the magnitude of this response has been surprising to say the least. In October of 2009 the ETSU Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Education was created and it is dedicated to the enhancement of sport education of coaches and sport science. Next fall (2010) we will begin a new PhD program in Sport Physiology and Performance. This PhD program is quite unique in the USA as it really does focus on sport science. Thus, efforts are being made to change the sport science paradigm and move into the future – we hope that this effort will serve as a guideline and model for other academic institutions.
