About the Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education

The Center of Excellence in Sport Science and Coach Education (CESSCE) calls Johnson City, Tennessee Home.  We operate in conjunction with the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, and we are a training site in partnership with several different governing bodies.

The CESSCE exists to create and disseminate research, provide service to a variety of sports teams, and to increase the preparation of coaches.

Our approach is interdisciplinary- we do not exist solely within academics, nor do we exist solely within athletics. Our aim is to the bridge the gap between the two. We recognize that coaches and sport scientists work best together, and we work hard to enhance the relationships that coaches and sport scientists share.

We exist to perform research, provide education, and to perform service for athletes, coaches and sport scientists.

With our research, we aim to perform both basic and applied studies, in order to improve performance and decrease risk of injury. We also aim to do research that positively impacts athletes at every level.

Our educational mission is to improve the abilities of coaches, sport scientists, athletes, and health professionals. We do this through conferences, symposia, outreach, and our master's/PhD programs.

The service component of our mission is focused on providing high quality monitoring and testing for athletes.  We work closely with East Tennessee State University Athletics, various National Governing Bodies, and local coaches to help improve sport outcomes for athletes.
