Slide 2: A simple analogy may help in understanding the why most exercise scientists are not sport scientists – Over the years, my colleagues and I have carried out several studies in which we have examined the effects of exercise and training on various parameters of cardiovascular function. While (hopefully) this research has expanded our understanding of how the cardiovascular system responds and adapts – it does not make me a cardiologist. Indeed most scientists who we think of as sport scientists are typically involved in academics and carry out sport science on a part-time basis, usually as research projects.

It is truly refreshing to see progress being made toward the development of ‘Sport Science’ as a distinct and separate discipline from ‘Exercise Science’.
